Valley Crews Knock Down Liberty Lake Fire

Fire crews from the Spokane Valley Fire Department made quick work of a house fire in Liberty Lake Tuesday afternoon.

The fire started in the engine compartment of a vehicle parked in front of the garage at 1212 S. Liberty Drive. A neighbor saw the fire coming out from the bottom of the vehicle, spreading to the garage and surrounding shrubbery. That neighbor also went to the front door to alert the homeowners and make sure they got out safely.

Fire investigators determined the fire was accidental and estimated the damage at $20,000.

School Testing In Washington State

School Testing In Washington State

Test results show Washington high school students do well in reading and writing on statewide tests but fall short in science.

Of this year's tenth graders, only about half are passing the science assessment.

81 percent passed the reading test on their first try and nearly 84 percent passed the writing test.

Results from math tests will be released in August.

The high school proficiency exam is one of four state requirements for graduation.

Waterfowl specialist Mikal Moore says they're trying to understand why nesting is declining in rural areas while complaints about urban geese have been rising.

The banding project began this week and continues through next Tuesday. Geese are currently easy to catch because they are molting and unable to fly.
