Spokane Valley looking for input on proposed new library

Spokane Valley looking for input on proposed new library

The city of Spokane Valley is looking for your input on the proposed new library and Balfour Park expansion.

Future plans will be discussed at a public meeting at 6:00pm on Monday, April 22 at the Spokane Valley Library at 12004 E. Main.

Officials will present an overview of the library and park design process. Those who come to the meeting will be put into small groups to brainstorm, and then all will come together to share ideas.

Spokane Valley aquired 8.4 acres of land along the north side of Sprague between Herald and west of Balfour Park. The library may purchase a portion of that land for a future library. That move would have to be approved by voters.

For more information on this meeting, contact Parks & Recreation Director Mike Stone at mstone@spokanevalley.org or (509) 720-5400.

Will I fall or Moonwalk into dancing history? Come find out!

Will I fall or Moonwalk into dancing history? Come find out!

I've been Moonwalking in my kitchen. I've been spinning in the kxly920 radio booth. And, lately, I cha cha in my sleep. All the practice over the last month or so will be put to the test on the stage of Spokane's Bing Crosby Theater April 27th. No pressure, but whether I win or lose depends on you.

CYT-Spokane is presenting the sixth annual Dancing with the Celebrities event. The evening features business leaders and local tv and radio personalities to raise money for the local theater group - and, I'll be on stage for two minutes and 30 seconds of dancing glory. I hope.

My partner Brenden Hebert is a dancing phenom; I can hear the air move when he kicks. He's been so patient with me over the last few weeks, teaching me to cha cha, and was kind enough to coreograph our dance to one of my favorite songs of all time. We will do our best to pay homage to the late, great Michael Jackson by dancing to his classic song Billie Jean. Not only will our dance feature traditional cha cha, we're also honoring one of the greatest dancers of all time with nods to some of his most famous moves.

Now is your chance to include your input on a possible new I-90 overpass at University Road in Spokane Valley. The city is hosting a public workshop next week to discuss the proposed overpass.

The city believes a new overpass at the site would improve car, bike and pedestrian access to the area.

The community meeting is Wednesday, April 17 from 6-8 p.m. at the Spokane Valley Fire Administration Building at 2120 N. Wilbur Road.

Topics to be discussed at the meeting include: estimated cost, environmental impact and possible crossing locations.

Swim in Flowers at SCC

Swim in Flowers at SCC

Students at Spokane Community College were surround by flowers this morning putting together displays for the Spring Flower Show this weekend. But these aren't ordinary floral arrangements. These are giant koi fish crafted from hundreds of flowers. Ranging in colors and varieties the horticultural program is bringing their theme, Swimming in Flowers, to life.

Students began building the forms earlier this month out of ply wood and chicken wire. Yesterday they started adding the flowers, and by the time their done it will have taken upwards of six hours to complete most of the arrangements.

Sitting Volleyball Exhibition and Clinic

Sitting Volleyball Exhibition and Clinic

I came. I sat. I conquered. That's the motto of the USA Sitting Volleyball Association. This weekend the Evergreen Region Volleyball Association is hosting an exhibition and clinic to spark the area's interest in the fast paced sport.

Lindsay Walter, of the Evergreen Region, says the idea was born at a board meeting last month. They were discussing the possibility of the ADA passing a law that would require schools to offer sports for disabled students. Volleyball is relatively easy to modify to sitting, so they contacted Elliot Blake, the sitting volleyball coordinator for USA Volleyball and set things in motion.

The event will feature an exhibition game between Seattle's sitting volleyball team and local volleyball coaches. The teams will include both disabled and able body players. The game will be followed by a clinic put on by Elliot Blake. Paralympic sitting volleyball player Heather Erickson will also be on hand teaching skills during the clinic.

Hometown Baritone Headed to NYC

Hometown Baritone Headed to NYC

You might remember Anthony McCain. You may have seen him singing and selling cookies two summers ago to raise money for music school. After two years at the Oberlin Music Conservatory in Ohio, McCain's rich baritone has gotten even better. So much better that he's now been accepted into a summer music program in New York City.

After graduating from North Central in 2011, McCain was given a full ride scholarship to Oberlin. However, he didn't have the money to actually get there. That is why he held the bake sale, and the community stepped in and helped get McCain there.

Last summer McCain was offered a job with a cruise ship. The offer was enticing, but after much thought and conversation with his mentors at Oberlin he declined so he could continue his education. It's proven to be the right choice. This year he has preformed in two of the main stage operas at Oberlin and was also selected as the baritone soloist with the Oberlin Choir on a tour in New York.

Spokane-Style Beer is Federally Approved

Spokane-Style Beer is Federally Approved

No-Li Brewhouse has been crafting beer in the Northwest since 1993. Their branding pays homage to their love of Spokane and the region. Now, No-Li has put Spokane on the map as a major force in the world of craft brews. Earlier this week No-Li announced that they have gotten federal approval for a new style of craft beer. Spokane-Style.

What makes a beer Spokane-Style? Well, first off it must be brewed and packaged in Spokane. But the origin of the beer goes beyond that. To be classified as Spokane-Style all the ingredients must come from within 300 miles of the city. Naturally, all of No-Li beers fall under the category of Spokane-Style.

No-Li attributes its close to home ingredients for driving its demand in other areas of the country. Whole Foods carries it in Washington D.C. and the largest liquor stores in Colorado have started selling the brand as well. No-Li is on tap both at Safeco Field and Century Link Field in Seattle.
