Local Entrepreneur Launches New Website

Every June, I dust off my cowboy boots, pair it with a polka dot sundress and hightail it to The Farm Chicks Antiques Show at the Spokane County Fairgrounds. For self proclaimed "junkers" the show is what Disneyland is to a 5 year old. Really, it's THAT exciting. Trust me.

In this crowd, a slight obsession for all things vintage and fabulous instantly bonds women from across the country. The show features refurbished antique furniture, beautiful, handcrafted home accessories and decor. The search for that perfect vintage piece is all part of the experience.

What started out in a barn in 2002 is now one of the largest show of its kind in the country. Serena Thompson, who lives on Green Bluff, is the entrepreneur responsible for creating the funky and oh. so. fabulous. weekend event.

Thompson has also penned several cookbooks, is a contributing editor for Country Living Magazine, a wife and mom to four boys. Whew! She pretty much rocks.

And now she's getting ready to launch her latest venture, a website called My Favorite Find. I recently had the opportunity to ask Thompson a few questions about her latest project.

AB: Tell me about your latest project My Favorite Find. How did you come up with the idea?

ST: I'd been receiving a lot of mail from all over the world, from readers asking how they could find great events similar to mine or shoppes in their area and from others who were hosting these events and running these shoppes, wondering how they could promote them. I soon realized there wasn't anything for them out there and decided that I'd just create it myself. And My Favorite Find was born.

West Valley High School band plays Shock opening night

The WVHS band, color guard, cheer leaders and dance team put on a show for Shock fans, opening night.

Band director Jim Loucks said before pregame, “We’re doing the Monday night football theme song. Then we’re going to do a gorgeous arrangement of Star Spangled Banner. We’ve got a thirty by twenty American Flag we’re bringing on the field. It’ll be pretty high emotion for everybody.

Half time we’re going to do a couple of our pep band tunes; we’re going to end with LMFAO Party Rock Anthem. The band is going get out and do their dance moves, the dance team, cheer leaders, color guard, it’s just going to be a party atmosphere.”

The words nervous and excited were used more than once among the students while they prepped for pregame.

“We’ve done this twice before, but it has never been to this magnitude; opening night, pregame, we’re doing half time, everything. So it’s pretty cool,” Loucks said.

Firefighters Celebrate Speedy Delivery

Firefighters Celebrate Speedy Delivery

Kids love fire trucks. It's not clear exactly when it happens, but at a very young age, kids fall in love with the sirens and lights and the brave men and women that ride inside. A baby girl from Liberty Lake has even more reason to love the crew from Spokane Valley Fire station 3 - they're the ones who delivered her into the world.

The 911 call came on January 25th. Lisa Elgee was in labor and there wasn't time to get to the hospital on her own. So, the crew from station 3 showed up, along with an ambulance crew from AMR. While there were no complications with the labor, there just wasn't time for even an ambulance ride. So, paramedic Nick Muzik took control and brought the baby girl into the world.

"We usually see and are on the opposite end of the spectrum, with the outcome not so good," Muzik said. He said he was on a natural high for days after this successful delivery.

Nine Arrested Spokane Valley House Party

Nine Arrested Spokane Valley House Party

You know your party is out of control when outdoor lighting is provided by a law enforcement helicopter.

That's what happened late Saturday night in the 16100 block of East Broadway in the Spokane Valley.  Air 1, the Spokane Sheriff's Department chopper, was hovering over the party scene, helping officers on the ground who were responding to a disturbance call triggered by a house party.

According to a Spokane Valley Police Department news release, when officers arrived at the scene, they were quickly outnumbered by a large number of intoxicated party-goers who were milling around the house and weren't particularly receptive to the officers' orders to go back inside.  The officers called for back-up, and eventually, units from all local law enforcement agencies were at the scene.

Most folks eventually cooperated, but two gentlemen, 24 year old Rion Holmes and 22 year old Nicholas Loverro, chose to wander in the middle of Broadway, disrupting traffic, according to Deputy Craig Chamberlin.  Both were arrest for Rioting, Disorderly Conduct and Resisting Arrest.

Aggressive Panhandler Wanted for Threatening Store Manager

Spokane Valley Police are looking for an aggressive panhandler who threatened a store manager with a knife over the weekend.

Police say a woman was panhandling in the parking lot of Harbor Freight at Sprague and Sullivan Sunday. Around 8:00 Sunday night, the manager said the woman opened the door to a customer's car and asked for money. When the manager approached the panhandler, she pulled out a knife and started walking towards him.

The woman said something the manager couldn't understand, then walked north through the parking lot and got into a white Ford F-150. The truck drove away, heading northbound on Sullivan.

The panhandler is described as a white woman, about 5'5" with a thin build. If you have any information on who she is, call Crime Check at 456-2233.
