Host Families Needed for Student Exchange

Host Families Needed for Student Exchange

The Northwest International Student Exchange in Coeur d'Alene and Spokane is looking for host families for a group of students visiting in July from China.

The group of 30 students as well as chaperones and interpreters will be touring Coeur d'Alene July 3rd-15th. There are two groups visitng Spokane from July 4th-15th and July 15th-August 4th.

NISE Coeur d'Alene still needs about 15 hosts for the students, who are between the ages of 9 and 12. This trip offers the students a unique opportunity to learn about American culture and to flex their English skills.

“It's been hard finding homes,” said Caroline Clement, the Group Coordinator for NISE Coeur d'Alene. Clement thinks it might because the visit falls over the 4th of July and the typically busy holiday is deterring volunteers.

LETEM Play expands beyond instruments to advocate music education

We first told you about LETEM Play in September, since then the non-profit started by two high school students has grown bigger than they creators could have ever imagined. Now, they are expanding and are offering more than just instruments.

LETEM- Life Enhancement Through Education in Music- was started by Katy Dolan and Philip Howard in February 2012. The Central Valley High School Juniors decided they wanted to share something they loved while making a difference in their community. LETEM provides instruments to students who can't afford them.

Now, a little over a year later, LETEM has branched off from just providing instruments. Dolan and Howard have also started providing music clinics to schools and groups that are trying to grow their music programs.

Gonzaga prepares for annual spring dance concert

Gonzaga prepares for annual spring dance concert

Gonzaga students are getting ready to hold their 12th annual spring dance concert later this month.

The concert, which features 90 student dancers, will include several different styles. Ballet, jazz, modern and musical theater routines will all be presented. Between dances, several videos will be shown celebrating Gonzaga's 125th anniversary.

In a statement from Gonzaga University, dance director Suzanne Ostersmith says the dance students worked all semester to prepare and are excited to present this final performance.

“This is a much bigger experience in that these students are not only learning a subject, they are applying it physically, living it and then presenting it before a live audience,” Ostersmith said. “The stakes are high. How often do you present a term paper to a public audience?”

Tickets are $5 each and available for purchase online here. To reserve a ticket, call the Gonzaga Theatre Box Office at (509) 313-6553. Cash, Visa, or MasterCard are accepted.

Spokane Valley looking for input on proposed new library

Spokane Valley looking for input on proposed new library

The city of Spokane Valley is looking for your input on the proposed new library and Balfour Park expansion.

Future plans will be discussed at a public meeting at 6:00pm on Monday, April 22 at the Spokane Valley Library at 12004 E. Main.

Officials will present an overview of the library and park design process. Those who come to the meeting will be put into small groups to brainstorm, and then all will come together to share ideas.

Spokane Valley aquired 8.4 acres of land along the north side of Sprague between Herald and west of Balfour Park. The library may purchase a portion of that land for a future library. That move would have to be approved by voters.

For more information on this meeting, contact Parks & Recreation Director Mike Stone at mstone@spokanevalley.org or (509) 720-5400.

Students began building the forms earlier this month out of ply wood and chicken wire. Yesterday they started adding the flowers, and by the time their done it will have taken upwards of six hours to complete most of the arrangements.

Hometown Baritone Headed to NYC

Hometown Baritone Headed to NYC

You might remember Anthony McCain. You may have seen him singing and selling cookies two summers ago to raise money for music school. After two years at the Oberlin Music Conservatory in Ohio, McCain's rich baritone has gotten even better. So much better that he's now been accepted into a summer music program in New York City.

After graduating from North Central in 2011, McCain was given a full ride scholarship to Oberlin. However, he didn't have the money to actually get there. That is why he held the bake sale, and the community stepped in and helped get McCain there.

Last summer McCain was offered a job with a cruise ship. The offer was enticing, but after much thought and conversation with his mentors at Oberlin he declined so he could continue his education. It's proven to be the right choice. This year he has preformed in two of the main stage operas at Oberlin and was also selected as the baritone soloist with the Oberlin Choir on a tour in New York.
