Last week, No-Li received a silver and gold medal in the most prestigious beer competition in the world.

Attention Muggles! J.K. Rowling wants to answer your questions

Attention Muggles! J.K. Rowling wants to answer your questions

If you could ask Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling one question, what would it be? Think about it.

And if you're thinking, “There's no way Rowling could ever answer my inquiry when I'm sitting in plain, old muggle filled Spokane, Washington,” you're wrong. Auntie's Bookstore is making magic happen!

On Tuesday, October 16th, Auntie's will host a live webcast of J.K. Rowling's interview with Ann Patchett. Rowling will be talking about her new book for adults, The Casual Vacancy. It will be Rowling's only U.S. appearance.

During the interview, Rowling will be answering questions submitted by fans. Now, hold your hippogriffs, because there is a catch. You have to submit your question sooner rather than later and hope in the name of Merlin that Rowling chooses your question.

STCU giving back to its roots

STCU giving back to its roots

Spokane's local not-for-profit credit union, founded by educators, is giving back to its roots. This month STCU is helping out four lucky teachers and their classes.

According to the National School Supply and Equipment Association, many teachers spend their own money to equip public-school classrooms.

STCU awarded four $500 classroom grants to local certified teachers whose names were selected at random from more than 2,000 entries. According to STCU, the money can be spent on anything the teacher believes will enhance students’ classroom experience, whether a basic need or something special.

The four winners were Marcii Barkley, a second-grade teacher at John Brown Elementary School in Rathdrum, Amanda Mortensen, who teaches 7th and 8th grade math at Evergreen Middle School, Julie Dodge, a special-education teacher at East Valley High School and Brian Hutchinson, a science teacher at St. George’s School.

Fall is in the air and that means it's time for The Great Pumpkin Race in the Cannon Hill Neighborhood. The annual event scheduled for October 27th,  encourages participants to find creative ways to make their pumpkins move the fastest.  Engineering students from Gonzaga University will be on hand to help.  If you want to get a head start on the race, art students from GU will help kids paint their pumpkins on October 20th at River Park Square.

All money raised from the event will go directly to Meals on Wheels.

Bedell and Beer: It Just Works

Bedell and Beer: It Just Works

Dreams dashed, hopes shattered and an uncertain future; Eddie Bedell faced it all and yet he remains optimistic. That's because Bedell believes in beer.

Almost a year to the day Bedell stood in front of what was supposed to be his tap house in the Audubon Neighborhood, telling his story of how difficult the City of Spokane had made it for him to realize his dream of becoming a small business owner, Bedell has found success.

Bedell joined forces with his best friend and created Vesuvius Marketing Group. Guess what they specialize in? Beer. Or more specifically Spokane's growing number of breweries and tap houses.

“I don't see too many other people around here trying to help these breweries,” Bedell said. “How cool would it be if I could focus on this type of industry, one I love anyway.”
