Book Club in a Bag

Book Club in a Bag

What's the biggest obstacle in the way of a book club? Every member being able to find the book.

Problem solved: The Spokane County Library offers a Book Club in a Bag, which is just what a group of food and wine-loving women need to keep their circle of literary discussion going.

Each blue bag contains 10 books, which may also include a large print and/or audio copy as well. Also inside: discussion questions, information about the author and tips for leading and participating in book discussions.

Forget about checking out The Postmistress though - The Saturday Night Book Clubbers already checked it out.

West Valley schools install defibrillators

Cardiac arrest is a real threat for young people, especially when it comes to athletes. Now, the West Valley School District is prepared to help victims with its newly installed Automated External Defibrillators or AEDs.

The AEDs sends a life saving shock to a victim's heart and now the District staff is getting trained on how to use it. It's part the district's new public access defribillation program that trains staff to recognize cardiac emergencies, perform CPR and use an AED. West Valley installed AEDs on their campus last spring in a joint effort with Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children's Hospital. The program called Project ADAM Inland Northwest is an effort to better protect our community against sudden death.

For information about Project ADAM and public access defibrillation programs in your school please call Ryan Schaefer (509) 474-3664.

Help Every Kid Get a Valentine

Help Every Kid Get a Valentine

Years later, you might still remember the rush of excitement when you opened the Valentine's cards from your elementary school classmates. A program in Spokane Valley is hoping to ensure that every child gets to experience that excitement on February 14th.

Spokane Valley Partners is accepting donating cards to ensure all kids can participate in the time-honored tradition of exchanging cards in the classroom. From now until February 10th, you can drop off donated cards to Spokane Valley Partners, located at 10814 E. Broadway. Anyone who needs cards for their child to hand out, you can pick them up between Monday February 6th and Friday February 10th. Families will be asked to show proof of Valley residency and sign for the cards. Valley teachers can also pick up Valentines for children whose parents are not able to pick them up.

Take A Seat At The Silver Cafe

Take A Seat At The Silver Cafe

Spokane is on the cutting edge – at least for Spokane County's Meals on Wheels program.

The county is about to enter territory that has never been explored by opening a Silver Cafe to the public. Normally, Silver Cafes are built in senior homes, where those 60-years-of-age and older can enjoy a home cooked meal for very little or no cost.

The idea to open the cafe to the public started with Pam Almeida, the Executive Director of the county's Meals on Wheels program (not to be confused with Mid-City Concerns Meals on Wheels, which is a different agency.)

“We had been told many times before that our food was good and restaurant quality,” Almeida said. So she thought why should our seniors be the only ones to enjoy the food?

Almeida has been to the Moose Crossing Cafe along Nevada in North Spokane before, but on this particular day there was a sign that simply said: “Because of road construction, we couldn't maintain our customer base.”

They were closed.

Bullets and Ink: A Man's Spin On Life

Bullets and Ink: A Man's Spin On Life

Doyle Wheeler approaches life just like he does pens; everything is possible. Throw anything his way and he will make it work for him.

The first lathe Wheeler ever received was from his father. He tinkered with it off and on, not really committing to the craft but enjoying the rhythm of turning a pen. The first ones he ever made became Christmas gifts for family and friends but he insists they weren't any good.

It's what every budding artist – excuse me, craftsman – would say of their early work.

Craftsmanship is in Wheeler's blood. His grandparents built their home in Spokane from the ground up.

Second Harvest Shopping Spree

Second Harvest Shopping Spree

Ready, set, shop!!!

Mark Peterson faced off against KXLY viewer Justin Holderby in a 3 minute shopping spree at Yoke's Fresh Market today. Justin won a KXLY contest and got the chance to fill his cart with groceries to take home. Mark filled his cart with food to donate to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Thanks to Mark's quick feet (and his Second Harvest helper), the food bank collected $1178.05 in groceries. Our favorite morning weatherman loaded up on cheese sticks, peanut butter, fruit cups and more.

Justin loaded up his cart with his favorites - beef jerky and coffee - and walked away with $556.27 in groceries. He also won a freezer from Fred's Appliance.
