Help Offered For First Time Home Buyers

The Washington State Housing Finance Commission is offering two First time Home Buyer Seminars this week.  The seminars will take place on Tuesday, June 7, and Thursday, June 9, at Guild Mortgage located at 12209 E Mission Avenue, Suite 7, in Spokane Valley.  The classes start at 6:00 pm, are free and open to the public. 

These seminars are for anyone thinking about buying their first home or anyone who has not owned a home in the last three years.

Have you ever wanted to be able to just go out and collect your own fresh chicken eggs - but don't know where to start?  Well, now's the time to learn.  Paul and Susan are teaching a class "Chicken Keeping 101" at Sun People Dry Goods Co., 32 W 2nd Ave., Ste. 200 in Spokane for $20.  You'll benefit from their years of experience learning about housing, breed selection, feeding, raising chicks and egg production.  Class begins this Saturday, June 4 from 2:30-5pm.  The class size is limited so please make sure you pre-register.

This Saturday is the big Community Planting Day at the East Valley Farms and Schools Partnership garden.  The community garden is located at Trent and Wellesley in Spokane Valley.  People can come help plant seeds that were donated by Second Harvest, Tri Community Grange, and Safeway.  Planting will start at 9am and will go til noon.    The garden provides an exciting opportunity to help the community  and students of the East Valley School District understand the complexities of farming and gardening while building unity amon

With temperatures finally hitting the 70's this week, it looks like local gardens will be blooming soon.  If you need some "goodies" for your garden, explore the Garden Expo this Saturday at the Spokane Community College Lair.  Over 250 garden-related vendors will be selling the latest in garden art, garden decor, yard furniture and all sorts of plants will be for sale as well.

Zillow, the real estate information company, just released its latest figures.  It's not a pretty picture for the Spokane area, (unless, of course, you're a first-time homebuyer.) 

New Soil Testing Lab

The Spokane Conservation District has a new Laboratory that can help your garden grow greener.   The District opened the new soil testing lab last week.  It tests soils for nitrogen, phosphorus, PH and organic matter.  Before it opened, the closest lab for soil testing was in Moscow, Idaho and Moses Lake.  Soil Scientist Eric Choker said results will tell gardeners what nutrients their soil needs and what chemicals you do and don't have to apply.  Choker also said the lab tests give better results than home kits sold at stores.  The District lab test costs $3

Farmers Frustrated With Winter Weather This Spring

You think you're tired of the cool, wet spring we're having in the Inland Northwest? Be thankful if you don't make your living as a farmer.

Monday's snowfall is the perfect example of what farmers are facing this spring: Wet weather, late season snowfall and cold nights all threatening their sensitive crops.

Jason Morrell at Walter's Fruit Ranch was discouraged when he came out to his apricot trees at Walter's Fruit Ranch to find dead buds because of the cold weather.

"It kept them at too cold of a temperature for too long, killing the bud," Morrell said.
