Alert citizens spot suspicious activity - tips lead to arrest

Alert citizens are to thank for the arrest of two men on felony charges of Burglary and Theft on Tuesday afternoon.

A UPS driver and Valleyford neighbor noticed two men acting suspicious in the 12500 block of South Madison Rd on Monday. The men drove off in a tan minivan after they realized they were being watched. The neighbor checked his garage and found items missing.

The same vehicle was spotted later that day in the 12300 block of East Dishman Mica Rd. A second victim says their surveillance camera was stolen from their fence around the same time.

The mini van’s license plate was relayed to Crime Check after both incidents and they matched.

Spokane Valley Police try to return recovered stolen property

Spokane Valley Police try to return recovered stolen property

Spokane Valley Police Department is trying a new tactic, similar to what Coeur d'Alene Police did earlier this month. They're taking advantage of Facebook to help return stolen property to its owner. They're trying it out after finding a Jeep full of stolen property.

Nathan J. Calvert, 28, was arrested Friday morning for one count of residential burglary and one count of motor vehicle theft. Patrol deputies were called to the area of the 1500 block of North Coach regarding a possible prowler. Calvert was detained by a resident until Spokane County Sheriff's Deputies could arrive.

Celebrity Bell Ringer Day

Celebrity Bell Ringer Day

And I say "celebrity" very tongue and cheek because God knows if you had to pick between me and Conan O'Brien - you'd make a bee-line for the fluffy-haired man.

But alas! December 17th is Celebrity Bell Ringer Day for The Salvation Army of Spokane.

Your KXLY4 11 o'clock anchor Kalae Chock and I will be stationed at the Northtown Mall Macy's ringing a bell from 10am to noon, hoping you have some spare change to donate to The Salvation Army.

Dogs run loose on South Hill - later captured by SCRAPS

Neighbors say two pit bull type dogs were seen running around and acting aggressively in unincorporated Spokane County on the South Hill. SCRAPS responded to the call and were able to locate the two dogs. They were confined and taken to SCRAPS in Spokane Valley.

The situation is still under investigation.

Lead animal protection officer, Nicole Montano, says this is a common call they receive, not just for pit bulls.

“We do not find that pit bulls are typically more aggressive than other breeds it really depends on the specific dog and whether or not it has been altered," Montano said.

By altered, Montano means spaying and neutering. She also referenced a Center for Disease Control statistic that says 70% of all dog bite cases involve un-neutered male dogs. The CDC says spaying and neutering dogs often reduces aggressive tendencies.

Montano continued, "Spaying and neutering your pets is important not just to reduce the pet overpopulation problem but it also helps modify aggressive behavior."
