Grade school teacher wins key to the city

Grade school teacher wins key to the city

An elementary school teacher was given the key to the city Tuesday evening.

Greenacres Elementary School first-grade teacher JoAnn Dowling was presented the honor by Spokane Valley mayor Tom Towey and the SV City Council.

“Mrs. Dowling is exactly the kind of person we want to recognize with this program,” Towey said. “She is someone who is making a difference through the everyday work she does, but who might not otherwise be widely known in the community.”

The Community Recognition Program – a part of the city's 10 year anniversary – counts Dowling as its first recipient. Someone will be honored each month.

Kim Johnson, whose daughter used to be in Dowling's class, nominated the teacher.

BBB identifies top scams of 2012

Here are BBB's Top 10 Scams of 2012:

Top Overpayment/Fake Check Scam: Car Ads

The online ad says something like "Get Paid Just for Driving Around" - a prominent company is offering $400+ per week if you'll drive around with their logo all over your car. They send a check to you, which you are supposed to deposit in your account and then wire part of the payment to the graphic designer who will customize the ad for your vehicle. Whoops! A week later, the check bounces, the graphic designer is nowhere to be found, and you are out the money you wired.

Fools float the river for 20th straight New Year

Fools float the river for 20th straight New Year

How did you spend your New Year's Day? Napping away a hangover on the couch, pretending to watch football?

That kind of afternoon sounds foolish to the group of rafters who floated the Spokane River on Tuesday. The Northwest Whitewater Association celebrated the 20th Annual Only Fools Float the River on the First the only way they knew how – by eschewing a day at home and getting onto the water despite the air being only 22 degrees when they launched.

“If you're a boater, you take every chance to get on the water,” Bruce Bernhardt said.

More than 30 people attended the event with more than 20 boats on the water.

“This is more exciting” than watching football, said Pat Keegan before launching.

Idaho ranks last in worker wages

Despite Idaho's reputation as a business-friendly state, it turns out it may not be as fortuitous a region for workers.

The Idaho Department of Labor said Thursday that the state ranks 50th in the U.S. in overall earnings by full- and part-time workers with a median wage at $23,192., the Associated Press reported.

Spokesman Bob Fick said the reason for the low average can be attributed to losses in production-sector jobs.

"You look at manufacturing in general in Idaho, and the only thing that's really held its own is food processing," Fick said. "It'll be another 20 years before we get back to where we were before the recession as far as construction goes."

Families celebrate life, Christmas at Ronald McDonald House

Families celebrate life, Christmas at Ronald McDonald House

While many people choose to spend the holidays away from home, others have to for their loved ones, which was the case for 22 families at the Ronald McDonald House in Spokane.

Even though those families are away, Santa and hope still finds them.

If you glance around the main room of the house and hear the laughter of children, you can find the meaning of Christmas from kids like Gabby LeDuc. Gabby moved to the Ronald McDonald House with her mom from Montana in May to be treated for leukemia. She's only six-years-old and wanted to spend Christmas with family.

"We miss being with her cousins that we would have been with last night, and today," Gabby's mom Kathy said.

So instead, the LeDucs are spending Christmas with their new family at the Ronald McDonald House. Her dad, Ryan Leduc, was able to take a few days off from his job in Kalispell to visit his little girl.

"I really am proud of how strong she's been through this," he said.

He also brought presents, which put Gabby in a good mood. When Gabby talked about the pink guitar she was given for Christmas from local country artist Luke Yates, she really lit up.
