Now is the time to adopt a cat!

Now is the time to adopt a cat!

If you're in the market for a cat, boy have we got a deal for you! The Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS) has more than 50 cats and kittens in need of a home.

To help ease the overcrowding, SCRAPS is waiving the cat adoption fee today and tomorrow.  Those fees normally range between $40 and $62, so this is quite a savings. The cats are already spayed or neutered.  You only pay the $15 pet license fee.

You can find these adorable kitties at the Spokane Valley Petco through Saturday evening. For more information, check out the SCRAPS website.  If you're not a cat person, they also have some pretty cute dogs!

Happy birthday, Spokane Humane Society!

Happy birthday, Spokane Humane Society!

Join the Spokane Humane Society as they celebrate their 115th birthday this Saturday at 6607 North Havana Street from 11 am - 2 pm.  They are inviting all of their four-legged "alumni" and their forever families back to the shelter for the celebration.

The Spokane Humane Society has a lot of great activities planned for the party.  Animals and their owners from each year can gather for special photos. Everyone is welcome to bring pets they have adopted from the Spokane Humane Society so they can interact with everyone.  You can also bring and share photos of your pets, tour the facility and see the new spay/neuter clinic.  They will even hold a special memorial for all of the pets that have passed away.

Also, local area dog groups will be on hand to display some of their favorite dog activities including frisbee chasing, agility training, obedience training and even a few dance moves.

For the past 115 years, the Spokane Humane Society has sought to provide a safe clean shelter, food, medical assistance and forever homes for abandoned and homeless animals.  They are hoping you will help them celebrate all of these years of service this Saturday..

Kitty Sitting: They Are On The Move

Kitty Sitting: They Are On The Move

Within the last couple of days, our SpokAnimal foster kittens have started opening their eyes and went from dragging themselves around, to getting their legs under them. The five kittes, who were born at our house the Saturday morning of Hoopfest, are slowly, but surely beginning to walk. They don't, however, like to be too far away from their momma (who we've named Snooki).

Snooki is a protective mom, but, she allows us to love on the babies. In a week or so, we'll take both mom and kitties to be checked out by the veterinarian at Spokanimal. They'll get the appropriate shots and we'll get an idea of when they'll be ready for adoption.

If you're looking for kittens, these five are as sweet and cute as they come and Snooki would be a great addition if you'd like an older cat.  She loves affection and attention. More updates to come.

Foster Kitty Update

Foster Kitty Update

Our foster cat "Snookie" and her kittens are doing great.  The kitties look less like tiny aliens and more like kittens each day.  They are now 7 days old.  We'll have them 3 more weeks before they get checked out at SpokAnimal by the vet.  From there she'll assess how they're doing and determine when they'll be ready for adoption.  (Snookie will need a home, too.)

A New Kitty Adventure

A New Kitty Adventure

My family successfully fostered our first litter of kittens for SpokAnimal.  When we got back from vacation, I texted to see if our services would be needed.  It wasn't 5 minutes later my phone was ringing.  Tamarah from SpokAnimal asked if we could take a cat that was about to have kittens.

Why not?!?!  So, a couple of hours later, my 14 year old, McKensie and I went to pick up a very pregnant, abandonded cat.  McKensie named her Snookie (for the Jersey Shores star who is also expecting).  Snookie is super friendly.  She loves to be loved on.

The next morning, a very uncomfortable Snookie went into labor.

Adventures In Kitty Sitting: Mission Accomplished

Adventures In Kitty Sitting: Mission Accomplished

It's time! Our job is done. My family has successfully fostered our first litter of kittens from SpokAnimal. Sweet Baby B (aka Bixby), the last of the litter of 5, is big enough and healthy enough to be spayed and adopted out. Her siblings have all found new homes through SpokAnimal, now it's Sweet Baby's turn.

When we got the litter, the kitties were so tiny, weighing about a half pound each. When we'd had them for about a week, Sweet Baby (who was the runt) became very sick. She was diagnosed with a parasite, which all the kittens ended up with. With the help of the wonderful staff at SpokAnimal, we nursed all of them back to health. Sweet Baby now tips the scale at a whopping 2 pounds. She should have her procedure today and should be ready for someone to adopt her tomorrow.

She is fiesty, cuddly and very social. My family has loved and handled her for weeks. We think she'll make a great pet.... you will love her!

Influx of felines: SCRAPS encourages adoptions

Influx of felines: SCRAPS encourages adoptions

Need a new best friend? Cleo (pictured above) is just one of over two dozen new potential best friends The Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS) has waiting for you. The "cat room" at SCRAPS has received 53 new adorable cats and kittens since Monday.

SCRAPS director Nancy Hill said that this rapid influx of felines is extremely high, and adoption is heavily encouraged.

“You can tell that many of these cats and kittens are used to being in a home – which is so unfortunate for them because their owners aren’t coming in to claim them. If these cats had some type of identification – like a license – we would gladly return them to their homes," said Hill.

Cat redemption rates in Spokane County are abysmal (at about 3 percent) compared to that of dogs (at 37 percent). SCRAPS encourages all cat owners to license, microchip, and provide tags for their pets.

SCRAPS is offering fee-waived cat adoptions this week, June 11th -16th. The cost for your new best friend can be as inexpensive as $15, or the price of a license.
