The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission sure is tech-savvy for a 100-year-old.

The commission announced today that it is launching the Pocket Ranger Smartphone App that is available for both iPhone and Android devices. The app includes guides, information and amenities on more than 100 state parks.

The Commission invites the public to celebrate 100 years of state parks in Washington by using this new App to plan park trips. Centennial 2013 events and activities will be available in parks all over the state throughout 2013. Spokane Valley Fire Department is asking the public and snow plow operators to be careful when shoveling sidewalks and plowing streets. Fire hydrants are becoming obstructed from snowfall and being covered by snow plows. Spokane Valley Fire Department asks that if you have a fire hydrant(s) on your property to keep them clear and visible at all times. Shoveling around the fire hydrants will assist us when locating and hooking up at times of a fire. Also be aware of plowing in cul-de-sacs and in a fire department turn-around. Fire apparatus need the entire area to maneuver. If you park your vehicle on the street, make sure you park as close to the curb as possible not blocking the road and leaving enough room for emergency vehicles.

 

How did you spend your New Year's Day? Napping away a hangover on the couch, pretending to watch football?

That kind of afternoon sounds foolish to the group of rafters who floated the Spokane River on Tuesday. The Northwest Whitewater Association celebrated the 20th Annual Only Fools Float the River on the First the only way they knew how – by eschewing a day at home and getting onto the water despite the air being only 22 degrees when they launched.

“If you're a boater, you take every chance to get on the water,” Bruce Bernhardt said.

More than 30 people attended the event with more than 20 boats on the water.

“This is more exciting” than watching football, said Pat Keegan before launching.
