Schools Respond To Child Luring Attempts

There have been a couple of attempted luring cases in local neighborhoods in the last couple of weeks. In response, the Central Valley School District is sending “stranger danger” tips to parents, to discuss with their children.

5k Heart Run Benefits Homeless Students

5k = 3 miles... you can do it! The Central Valley PTA and PTSA are hosting a 5k run to benefit the HEART program, which exists in all school districts to support homeless students.

This particular run will benefit the Central Valley HEART program, which helps CV families find permanent housing, heating sources, Christmas gifts and has helped provide Thanksgiving dinners for more than 60 families. Last year, approximately 350 students in the CV School District qualified for the HEART program.

West Valley High School band plays Shock opening night

The WVHS band, color guard, cheer leaders and dance team put on a show for Shock fans, opening night.

Band director Jim Loucks said before pregame, “We’re doing the Monday night football theme song. Then we’re going to do a gorgeous arrangement of Star Spangled Banner. We’ve got a thirty by twenty American Flag we’re bringing on the field. It’ll be pretty high emotion for everybody.

Half time we’re going to do a couple of our pep band tunes; we’re going to end with LMFAO Party Rock Anthem. The band is going get out and do their dance moves, the dance team, cheer leaders, color guard, it’s just going to be a party atmosphere.”

The words nervous and excited were used more than once among the students while they prepped for pregame.

“We’ve done this twice before, but it has never been to this magnitude; opening night, pregame, we’re doing half time, everything. So it’s pretty cool,” Loucks said.

Spokane Valley Police Investigating School Burglary

A burglary set off the alarms of Greenacres Elementary School early Saturday morning. The call was dispatched to Spokane Valley police around 2:57 a.m. who arrived to find a window pried out of the wall on the east side of the school.

Responding officers saw a ceiling mount projector hanging by wires inside the classroom.

A perimter was set up around the school while a Spokane Police K-9 Unit was requested to help search the area, but no suspect was found.

Heading To U-High

Heading To U-High

My baby (actually my oldest) is an 8th grader, and headed to high school next year.  Am I freaking out?  Naahh... YES!

We'll be joining future Titans and their Parents/Guardians tonight for a University High School open house.  This is a chance to get acquainted with the school, teachers, staff, and students.

We'll be able to check out options for classes, clubs and activities.  High school counselors will be at the middle schools this week, to begin the registration process with 8th grade students. Information for parents to review will be coming home, too.

Going Beyond Volunteerism, Teaching Civic Thinking

Going Beyond Volunteerism, Teaching Civic Thinking

A Spokane teacher was recognized in Olympia this week for his work teaching civic engagement, the foundation he says is what it means to be an American citizen.

Ned Fadeley teaches high school students at RiverCity Leadership Academy, part of West Valley School District. It’s a unique project-based school for students who aren’t in the mainstream high school system.

Students don’t go there to learn the process of government or the cabinet positions. They come there to learn civic thinking, something that goes beyond volunteerism. Fadaley says it teaches intellectual responsibility.

It’s that process that made him a finalist for the Civic Teacher of the Year award. Fadaley and his students traveled to Olympia to see him recognized. They met local elected officials like state Rep. Andy Billig and Timm Ormsby. They also met state Sen. Mike Padden who recognized him with a certificate for his work in civic education.
